Ayers Rock or Uluru

Ayers Rock, (also known as Uluru), is located in the southern part of Northern Territory in central Australia. Ayers Rock is a huge rock formation, made up of sandstone. Ayers Rock is one of the oldest rocks on Earth. Ayers Rock is said to be a holy place for the Aboriginals who lives in Australia. Ayers Rock or Uluru; rocky formation mountain, has many, caves, water holes, natural springs and old historic paintings. The word Uluru does not have any important meaning. In 1873 the new name was given to Uluru and now it is also called Ayers Rock. This name was given to the rock at an honor to The Chief Secretary, Sir Henry Ayers.

Uluru was formed over a period of about 500 million years .The Ayers Rock/ Uluru is considered to be the greatest monolith having 348 m height.It is very interesting to know that more than two-third of the rock is within the ground. Another interesting fact is that the sun can change the colors of Ayers Rock. During the rain the colors are changed from red to blue, pink, brown and silver. Ayers Rock/Uluru is covered with caves. The aborigines believe that these caves kept a spiritual importance.

There is a national park nearby Uluru, called, Uluru National Park. This park has reach flora and fauna. Over 150 types of birds and 26 types of mammals live in the park.There is an Aborigine legend that Uluru was once an ocean, but after a great fight at its shores, it rose up forming the great blood-colored rock.
